I just got done reading a great report by Justin Brooke entitled SEO Lies: A Report About SEO Truths. Now, I’m personally not an SEO expert by any means but I have a personal interest in it as well as a fundamental understanding of it’s power. I love SEO. I’ll admit, for some people right now times can be tough. On the other hand right now for others these times can be prosperious. I’m not here to argue anything about economic viewpoints but you have to admit no matter what state the economy is, there are people who lose money and there are people who make money.

I’ve personally seen this in my life both ways right now. I have friends that due to economic conditions they have had hours cut or have even lost jobs right now and for them times are getting tough, real tough. For a personal training business that I personally work with, the month of November which is typically one of the lowest income months out of the year is now set to be the 3rd or 4th most profitable month of 2008.

When times get tough it’s a perfect time for a personal gut check on your online business. In a previous post I did about how to beat the tough times with internet marketing, my good friend Erik Stafford made some great points in his video. People will still buy things that they consider to be essential. It is hard for people to give up things that they enjoy. When it comes time to cut expenses, the things that people are passionate about tend to made to “fit into the budget” someway, somehow.

There are a few areas that are basically “recession proof”. They tend to be the areas of health, relationships and making money. These are areas that if you currently are within that market, you want to make sure that you craft your offer to become as irresistable as possible so that when people look at what you have to offer your offer is so powerful that it shifts from a “want” to a “need”.

In all honesty, the main benefit of a recession is that all of the competition out there that is not applying smart marketing principles, have a solid business foundation based upon an incredible offer and not providing extreme value to their customers will start to go under. This gives you the perfect opportunity to rise above the failing competition and gain valuable attention on what you have to offer. You also have the opportunity to provide greater value and service to others than your compeition is able to. This alone can skyrocket your success online in your market.

If you don’t currently have an online business, now is the time to start up one. Starting a business online is one of the cheapest investments you can make. All it takes to get started is literally a domain name for under $10 for a year and a reliable hosting account for about another $10 a month. It’s important, now more than ever for you to have an ability to leverage your own skills and be able to create your own income rather than having someone else control it for you.

If you don’t have an irresistable offer on a product or service you are selling, now is the time to craft one. Your offer is what gets people’s attention on what you can do for them. The better your offer, the greater your ability to help more people with what you have and the greater your ability to increase your income.

In my earlier personal example from my own life, my friends that I mentioned were not in a position to control their own income. They were working for someone else who made that decision for them. We were in a position of being able to control our own income which can make all the difference in these economic times. As I said before, no matter what state the economy is, there are people who lose money and there are people who make money. The question is, which side do you want to be on?
